CELINE

The next day, I wake up to the servants still clearing away the remnants of the feast. Food crumbs are growing ripe under the rushes, lavender and mint I sprinkled on the floor of the Great Hall. The tapestries are hanging askew. I did return, eventually, to the ball, even though Hugo urged me to take as much time as I needed away from what was happening in my own castle.

But I had a duty to my guests, and it was good that I returned, because Count Goderic pulled me aside. ‘You want to see Isabella,’ he said.

Recalling our conversation at the table, I was too embarrassed to even admit that yes, I was itching to see her. So I said nothing, another wave of humiliation washing over me.

‘I will tell you this much, then,’ he said, with a soft touch on the elbow. ‘It is most likely that you’ll find her at the Golden Pavilion.’

I wanted to protest, to say that it didn’t make much sense to look for her in a ruin, but by then Count Goderic had swept away from me.

I thought I’d untangle this today. That, and prepare for the reckoning with Philippe. For everything that happened at the ball.

Yet this morning he’s nowhere to be found. I came down to look for him even before I managed to get dressed for the day, haunting the halls and chambers of the castle in my chemise. He isn’t in the Great Hall, nor in his working chambers, nor in his own rooms. With a pang, I realise he must have gone to do something that would really soothe him, like help a cow with her calving.

Later, I think.

I’ll look for him later.
